Book Reading 7 – Opening Skinner’s Box

Chapter 1 – Opening Skinner’s Box
Summary

In this introductory chapter, Slater gives some background on B. F. Skinner.  She initially explains the overall negative attitude toward him of most people, but then shows the side of him many might not be aware of.  This brings into question whether or not most people misinterpreted the meaning of his findings.  Did his wording properly express what he was trying to say?

Discussion
I did not know much about Skinner before reading this chapter, but I did recognize some of the experiments mentioned.  When Skinner’s daughter mentioned that “you can’t separate science from philosophy,” this really hit me for some reason.  It just makes a lot of sense.  You first have the concrete findings of science.  But if they are put in a philosophical context, the meaning of these findings can define so much more.  I really look forward to reading more of this book.
