Book Reading 6 - Coming of Age in Samoa

Chapter 2 – A Day in Samoa
Summary

Mead details a single day in the life of the Samoans.  She goes into great detail from when people begin to wake up all the way to when people get ready for bed, and then how some stay up past everyone else’s normal bedtime.

Discussion
Aside from the setting obviously, the actions of the Samoans don’t seem that different from ours.  People wake up, get working on something or go catch food for dinner, and then entertain and eat dinner before bedtime.  Also, the teenagers stayed up later than most dancing and partying just as they do here.  I found that interesting, even though the vast majority of adolescents in the world probably do this.

Appendix II – Methodology of this Survey
Summary

The methods used in the study were discussed.  She explains the details of her methods, as well as many of the flaws in her data and how it is impossible for it to be completely correct.

Discussion
I have only recently become aware of the immense complexity of a large-scale ethnography study.  One thing that seems consistent is that they can never be completely correct, and you just do the best you can with the knowledge of other studies that have been done.  There’s just too many variables that can’t be controlled or fully taken into account.

Appendix V – Materials Upon Which the Analysis is Based
Summary

The results of the data collection were explained, and problematic restrictions were outlined.  The main data that was collected for the study was shown in written and chart form.

Discussion
It’s hard to believe how much Mead was able to take into account.  She seems to know exactly what the unavoidable restrictions to her tests were.  I like how thorough she seems to have been with this study.
